Birketts supports Pro Bono Week
4 November 2022
Birketts is demonstrating its ongoing endorsement for pro bono work by pledging its support for the 21st annual Pro Bono Week.
Taking place from 7 to 11 November 2022, Pro Bono Week is organised by a committee including representatives from pro bono charities, law schools and law firms. Endorsed by the Law Society, the Bar Council and CILEx, the initiative is intended to promote thinking around pro bono in the UK and provides an opportunity to celebrate the voluntary contributions made by many members of the legal profession around the UK.
Birketts is supporting Pro Bono Week 2022 with an internal communications campaign around the benefits of taking part in pro bono initiatives. Aimed to encourage even more colleagues to volunteer their time for pro bono purposes, the campaign will showcase the work already being undertaking in this area by colleagues across the firm.
Many of Birketts’ lawyers provide pro bono advice throughout the year, giving up hours of their personal time to provide legal advice to those who could not otherwise afford it. In the 2021-22 financial year, the firm’s lawyers collectively clocked up 755 hours of pro bono work.
James Dinwiddy (Partner in the Agricultural Team) amd Sophie Thornley (Senior Associate in the Construction and Engineering Team and supporter of LandAid and the Red Balloon charity) are examples of Birketts lawyers who provide ongoing pro bono work, each regularly supporting a charity of their choice.
On her pro bono work Sophie Thornley said: “My pro bono work benefits me and the firm in many ways. Firstly, it is good for the soul – it helps me to feel that I am contributing to the community. My network has also expanded greatly. I feel proud that Birketts allows me to do this within my role at the firm.” For more information on Pro Bono Week, visit https://probonoweek.org.uk/.
