Emma Nel
Emma Nel joined Birketts in October 2023 as a Solicitor in the Corporate Tax Team in London. She is a qualified Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand. She was admitted as a Solicitor in 2021 after completing her Professional Legal Studies in 2020.
She holds a degree in Law (LLB) and a degree in Business (BBus) majoring in international business and strategy, from the Auckland University of Technology. She also holds a Diploma in Tax, which she earnt in 2020.
Emma’s professional legal expertise started in 2019 when she joined a NZ based firm as a Graduate in Tax Advisory, where she gained experience advising on a wide range of tax types, including employment taxes, tax planning, and advising on tax compliance. Emma has also worked for one of the Big Four accounting firms, where she was part of the International Tax and Transaction Services team, specialising in Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A). As part of her M&A experience, she was responsible for conducting tax due diligence, a crucial process in evaluating the potential tax risks and benefits of various business transactions. She was also heavily involved in reviewing transaction agreements and related documents.
Emma has a unique accounting perspective to tax law and has worked on various tax advisory projects and M&A deals for a diverse clientele, including corporates, private equity firms, individuals, and high-profile clients. From individual tax returns to intricate advisory projects and M&A deals, she has assisted clients in navigating the complexities of the tax system.
